The Precision Dowel Locating System was developed at FIO Automotive to improve part alignment accuracy and repeatability on the production floor. Designed to ensure consistent positioning of stamped components before welding and assembly, the system features a durable dowel and sleeve setup engineered for tight tolerances and long-term use. I handled the full mechanical design process, from CAD modeling to creating manufacturing drawings for the tool room.

Purpose
The Precision Dowel Locating System was designed to ensure that metal blanks entering FIO Automotive’s 800 to 1600 ton stamping presses are perfectly aligned before each press cycle. Precise positioning is critical to guarantee that every stamping process, including punching, shearing, and bending, occurs in the exact same location for all blanks. This consistency prevents dimensional variation, improves die alignment, and ensures that downstream welding and assembly operations maintain tight quality standards across all production batches.
Design
The Precision Dowel Locating System was designed and modeled in SolidWorks to ensure accurate and repeatable positioning of the blanking template used in the stamping process. The design prioritized rigidity, precision, and ease of installation on the press bed while minimizing setup time between production runs. The dowel and sleeve arrangement was engineered to precisely locate the blanking template, ensuring that each blank entering the press aligns consistently relative to the dies. The base structure includes counterbored fastener holes and reinforced mounting points to maintain stability under repeated press operations. Every feature was dimensioned and toleranced to support accurate machining and long-term durability in a high-production stamping environment.
Drawings and Vendor Communication
The drawing shown here represents the completed assembly drawing for the Precision Dowel Locating System. Individual part drawings containing detailed GD&T and dimensions cannot be shared due to confidentiality under FIO Automotive’s NDA agreement. Each drawing was created in SolidWorks with proper dimensioning, tolerancing, and part numbering following FIO’s drafting standards. Once finalized, the drawings were sent to an external machine shop for fabrication. I managed multiple rounds of communication with the vendors to confirm machining tolerances, fits, and material requirements, ensuring that the dowels, plates, and fasteners aligned precisely as intended. This collaboration between design and manufacturing helped deliver a high-quality, production-ready locating system that met all functional and precision requirements.
Final Product
The completed Precision Dowel Locating System was successfully manufactured, assembled, and installed for use during stamping press setup procedures. The system allows operators to accurately position the blanking template before production begins, ensuring that all blanks enter the press in a consistent and repeatable orientation. Once setup is complete and alignment is verified, the dowel system is removed and does not experience any of the operational loads or forces from the press. This precise setup tool greatly improves efficiency and consistency during die changes and production preparation.
